Contact Info: kket2000@aol.com A Word about Semps Hens and ChicksHens and chicks (Sempervivum spp.) are another common, long-lived succulent in gardens. A large mother plant (hen) surrounded by smaller offshoots (chicks) gives these plants their common name. Hens and chicks have thick or thin, pointed leaves forming a one to five inch tall rosette. Semps come in many different colors. Many different sizes. Late summer a flower stalk may emerge from the center of mature plants topped by a cluster of yellow, red or pink flowers. After blooming, the mother plant dies, leaving her "offspring" to take her place. Hens and chicks will do well in pots and on rock walls. Succulents, while easy to grow, cannot tolerate wet feet and will usually die in poorly drained soils. hens and chicks, and sedums can all be planted in any well-drained garden soil. All of them should be placed in part to full-sun. Depending on your Location. Once established, they require little or no fertilizing or watering. Semps should be bought young. Chicks or a young Hen are the best way to ensure offspring. Hardiness: Zone 4 Succulents offer a wide variety of colors and textures with little maintenance and are an excellent addition to your garden. All the things you can do with them...
